Why Choose Electric Over a Diesel UTV?

We all know that the Government plans to achieve its zero emissions target by 2050. For the ambition to become a reality, all vehicles in the UK including electric utility vehicles (UTVs) will need to be ‘zero-emission capable’ by 2035. Let’s take a look at why and how an electric UTV can now easily compete against its diesel counterparts. Here are our top reasons to #GoElectric.

Reason One, They’re Powerful

Performance has always been a big concern when looking at the difference between an electric and diesel UTV, however such concerns are now a thing of the past due to powerful motors and lithium batteries.

“Electric UTVs are making huge leaps when it comes to development. The latest HiSun lithium-powered machines have been proven to out-perform their fossil-fuelled rivals for performance on challenging ground conditions,” commented Electric Wheels’ MD, Will Hinks.

Most of the current contenders use 5 Kw motors and lead-acid batteries. These machines are perfectly capable in most situations but tend to struggle when faced with really steep terrain or heavy loads. “HiSun has now manufactured a machine with even more power. Equipped with a lithium battery and 7.5Kw and 15Kw motors, HiSun’s top of the range electric UTV, nicknamed ‘The Beast’, will out-perform any of its diesel rivals for speed, off-road ability and carrying load,” he added.

Reason Two, Zero Carbon Emissions

As with any fully electric vehicle there are no carbon emissions at all from an electric UTV. Reducing carbon emissions is the best way to tackle climate change and reduce global warming. What we all do in the next decade to limit emissions will be critical to the future.

A latest initiative announced by the government is that red diesel, which is used mainly for off-road vehicles, accounts for around 15% of all the diesel used in the UK and is responsible for the production of nearly 14 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. As of April 2022, red diesel will no longer be available to a large proportion of sectors – excluding agriculture, horticulture, forestry, and fish farming – meaning once it’s phased out, fuel will be more expensive to carry out daily tasks.

Kelly Pepper, event organiser at Suffolk Trail Fest, commented: “We strive to deliver an environmentally friendly running festival, so the electric buggies were absolutely perfect. We used them continuously throughout the 3-day festival and they were an absolute dream.”

Reason three, Electric UTVs are More Economical to Run

A diesel UTV will typically take 20 litres of fuel in its tank and will need filling up daily to carry out a typical workday. This can prove to be very costly. An overnight charge for an electric UTV is roughly £1 compared to approximately £30 per day on fossil fuels – excluding red diesel which as mentioned will no longer be available for some industries.

Opting for electric will mean massive savings in fuel costs, but also opting for electric means the added monetary bonus of no road tax. Our electric UTVs can be used on-road as well as off-road.

Reason Four, Less Maintenance

With an electric UTV there are fewer parts to service, so they’re generally less expensive to repair and maintain compared to fossil fuel vehicles. There is no engine, fuel, or filters etc, so there is much less to go wrong through general wear and tear. The battery, motor, and associated electronics require little to no regular maintenance. There are fewer fluids, such as engine oil, that require regular replacements and brake wear is reduced due to regenerative braking.

Reason 5, a Smooth & Silent Drive

An electric vehicle doesn’t feature a gear box or a combustion engine, which makes acceleration smoother and the overall driving experience much quieter. The only noise an electric motor makes is a faint whirring sound. Perfect for driving where noise could startle livestock or where noisy vehicles could cause unnecessary disturbance at an event.
